Why is hydrochlorothiazide used?

Hydrochlorothiazide is used:

• To treat high blood pressure.

• To treat water retention in the body.

Do not take hydrochlorothiazide.

• If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

• If you are unable to urinate.

• If you are taking lithium.

Warnings and precautions

Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including:

• If you are allergic to sulfonamide or sulfonylurea antibiotics.

• If you have kidney problems.

• If you have liver problems.

• If you have heart problems.

• If you have diabetes.

• If you have low blood pressure.

• If you are dehydrated.

• If you have abnormal levels of electrolytes in your blood.

• If you suffer from glaucoma.

• If you have gout.

• If you have an autoimmune disease called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Possible side effects

Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is not known.

Serious side effects:

• Kidney problems

• Eye problems

• Serious changes in electrolyte levels

Other medications and hydrochlorothiazide

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take.

Hydrochlorothiazide interacts with the following drugs:

• Lithium

• Digoxin

• Other medications used to lower blood pressure

• Medications that affect potassium levels in the blood

• Medications used to treat diabetes

• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

• Steroids

• Cholestyramine and colestipol (for cholesterol)

How to take hydrochlorothiazide

• This medication is intended for adults.

• Take this medicine as directed by your doctor.

• If you take this medicine once a day, take it in the morning.

• For the treatment of water retention: The usual starting dose is 25–100 mg daily in two divided doses. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on your response (maximum 200 mg/day).

• For the treatment of high blood pressure: The usual dose is 12.5 - 25 mg once daily (maximum 50 mg/day).

How to store hydrochlorothiazide

• Store at room temperature 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).

• Store away from sunlight.

• Keep this medicine out of reach of children.

• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the carton.
